The Scout Hut is located in its own wooded grounds on the south slope of Bickerton Hill with direct access to the whole of the public access land on the hill, and further via the extensive network of local footpaths including the Sandstone Trail. We make every effort to be outdoors on the hill whenever daylight and the weather allow it.
The Scout Movement is the largest co-educational youth organisation in the world, with over 28 million members in 216 countries and territories, including 450,000 young people in the UK. Its purpose is to help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
Scouts take part in age related activities as diverse as expeditions, camping, kayaking, climbing, sailing, caving, hill walking, pioneering, map reading, first aid, survival skills, DiY, electronics, air rifle shooting, archery and cooking.
Every 2 – 3 years the older members join expeditions overseas, usually to the International Scout Centre in the Swiss Alps. There’s something for every young person. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.
Once they reach 14 our young members are eligible to take part in all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) scheme. The Wildfire Explorer Unit is an accredited DofE Centre with its own trained DofE Leaders and Assessors. Completion of the DofE Gold leads to the prestigious King’s Scout Award.
Scouting relies, of course, on the willing help of volunteer adult Leaders who give their time in return for the satisfaction of knowing they are helping young people develop into responsible citizens and members of the community.
